DEPUTY DIRECTOR

Mobilize the Immigrant Vote (MIV) is a California alliance of organizations advancing the broader movement for social change by building immigrant voting power.  MIV strategies include building the capacity of community-based organizations working with New American and immigrant communities of color to educate and mobilize their constituents to vote; linking these efforts with ongoing community organizing; shaping the debate on immigrant civic participation; and developing models for collaboration.  MIV launched its work in 2004 as the first-ever multi-ethnic, immigrant-based coalition building electoral capacity of community-based organizations in California.  Mobilize the Immigrant Vote is a non-partisan charitable organization and is affiliated with the MIV Action Fund.

To expand our alliance and build our organizational capacity, MIV has created a new position of Deputy Director.  The right candidate will have the drive and experience to lead MIV’s organizational growth over the coming years and engage larger numbers of immigrant communities across California and the nation.  Join our team!

Key Areas of Responsibility

(1) Political Strategy and Campaign Development (Approx. 40% FTE)

Provide strategic thinking and leadership to implement MIV’s Strategic Plan and Campaigns

  • · Conduct campaign research and technical assessments
  • · Support MIV Staff and organizational partners to develop detailed Campaign plans
  • · Evaluate Campaign outcomes and impacts
  • Supervise Political Director and Strategic Communications Director
  • · Hire and supervise temporary campaign staff and consultants

(2) Strategic Alliance-building (30% FTE)

  • · Develop and strengthen MIV as an effective and cohesive statewide alliance
  • · Prepare and facilitate Strategy Council meetings and work groups
  • · Lead expansion of the MIV alliance into more diverse immigrant and New American constituencies and new areas of California

(3) Fundraising and Program Budget Management (20% FTE)

  • · Support Executive Director as a thinking partner in fundraising strategy
  • · Serve as spokesperson for public presentations
  • · Write grant proposals and grant reports
  • · Prepare and manage program budgets & coordinate with Operations Director for program needs

(4) Organizational Leadership (10% FTE)

  • Participate in organizational planning and regular leadership meetings
  • Consult on strategic questions beyond the scope of campaigns and communications
  • Support E.D. in strategic planning and evaluating/refining programs to meet overall mission
  • Participate in board development by attending board meetings as needed and preparing and reporting on program updates

Required Experience and Qualifications

s   5 years senior level campaign experience, preferred at state or national scale

s   Ability to harness information and consult with allies to develop dynamic analysis of the political landscape, identify opportunities and challenges, and translate into campaign strategy and alliance programs

s   Strategic thinker with ability to take initiative in driving strategies and overcoming obstacles. Problem solver and risk taker.

s   Familiarity with grassroots organizing, advocacy and electoral engagement techniques

s   Experience and commitment to working with low-income immigrant communities of color and on immigrant issues

s   Coaching and supervision experience. Ability to mentor staff and organizational partners

s   Excellent skills in working with diverse individual and organizational cultures, interpersonal communication, writing, team-building, public speaking

s   Program management skills, work planning, budget management experience and attention to detail

s   Flexible and team-oriented approach to problem-solving

s   Familiarity with 501c3, 501c4 and PAC structures and PDI database preferred

s   Fundraising experience, grant writing skills

s   Bilingual or multilingual language skills preferred

s   Willingness to travel frequently, within California and nationally
